Clermont appoints Red to lead Tower Hotel refurbishment

Specialist contractor Red Construction Group has been appointed by Clermont Hotel Group to oversee the refurbishment of the Tower Hotel by Thistle in London.

The project will be carried out by Red’s Special Projects division and adds to the group’s growing portfolio of hotel developments, which includes about £110m of works across London and the South West.

Recent projects include the Voco Zeal Hotel at Exeter Science Park, completed in 2024 as the UK’s first branded net zero carbon hotel.

The Tower Hotel, located near St Katharine Docks and overlooking the River Thames, first opened in 1973. Red’s team will refurbish the building’s Tower and Bridge suites and upgrade key structural elements to improve both function and public spaces. Designs are led by Unwin Jones Partnership.

Work to the Tower and Bridge suites will include new glazing, timber panelling and lighting, as well as the installation of moveable walls to divide the space into up to six rooms for conferences, business meetings and events. The project also includes upgrades to washroom facilities.

Elsewhere in the hotel, the current mezzanine-level function room will be converted into a new public space, with a waterproof concrete wall, enhanced IT infrastructure and planting.

The hotel will remain open throughout the works. Red said it will focus on delivering high-quality finishes while maintaining safety for staff and visitors.

Nathan Farrar, managing director of Red Special Projects, said: “The Tower Hotel by Thistle is an important institution for London. We are pleased to have a Clermont Hotel Group property within our portfolio, providing a world-class experience for guests and businesses alike.

“Our work to refurbish the iconic Tower and Bridge suites and other function areas will enable Clermont Hotel Group to diversify their offerings, and ensure the hotel remains an attractive space for users over the long-term.”

Iain Grieve, senior property project manager at Clermont Hotel Group, added: “Since its opening, the Tower Hotel by Thistle has proved to be an enduring part of London’s landscape. We have always looked at ways in which we can enhance our offering to meet the needs of businesses, guests and visitors, and the refurbishment of suites and function areas forms an important part of this journey.”

The Tower Hotel project is Red’s ninth in London and the South East. The contractor has delivered refurbishments at sites including Legoland Windsor’s Woodland Village, London Marriott Hotel County Hall and the St Mark’s Square development.

Its hotel portfolio includes more than 1,000 beds, including 658 refurbished rooms.

The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.
