Huddersfield’s George Hotel set for renovations ahead of reopening

The George Hotel, a Grade II listed Huddersfield hotel, will undergo further renovations next month as it prepares for a reopening under Radisson Hotel Group.

The hotel will become the first Radisson Red hotel in the Yorkshire and Cumber region.

Historically seen as the birthplace of the rugby league in 1895, the property has been left vacant since 2013, until it was bought by Kirklees Council in 2020. The objective is to restore the building, following the council’s plans to transform the town centre through a wealth of new developments including transport upgrades and housing.

Once renovated, the hotel is expected to offer 108 guest rooms, as well as a restaurant and bar. The facilities will also include gym and conference rooms to attract a range of visitors.

The £30 million deal will protect the building’s longstanding architecture, whilst also rebuilding its appeal for guests.

Councillor Graham Turner, cabinet member for Finance and Regeneration, said:  “The transformation of the George Hotel is one of the major projects of the Huddersfield Blueprint and regenerating the town centre. It is a gateway building into the town which, when renovated, can boost our local economy and be perfectly placed for visitors to stay.

“We want to proudly celebrate our town’s rich history and will soon want people to help create the look and feel of the building, so it represents our heritage, identity and character that makes our community unique.”

Adela Cristea, chief development officer UK, Ireland and Nordics at Radisson Hotel Group, said: “It’s fantastic to see work progress on this historic building, the hotel is rich in history and heritage and one of Huddersfield’s most iconic landmarks.

“We’re delighted to be in partnership with Kirklees Council as they carry out their impressive plans to regenerate the town and attract visitors. Once construction is complete, we’re looking forward to introducing the signature bold, vibrant style of our Radisson RED brand, whilst paying homage to the town with references to its history, culture and the people.”
