An ornate 1830s country mansion built by the founder of Theakston Brewery has been put on the market for £850,000.
Bellfield Country Suites, located on the edge of Masham in North Yorkshire, is a grade II listed building, which comprises two thirds of the original Bellfield House. It has operated as a holiday and leisure business for the past 50 years.
The Victorian mansion was originally constructed by Colonel Thomas Theakston as a family residence. In 1976, the property was converted into 12 holiday suites. The building retains several period features, including marble fireplaces, a wood staircase and a galleried landing.
The business is positioned to benefit from tourists visiting regional attractions in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Nearby locations include the city of Ripon, as well as the towns of Leyburn, Harrogate and Richmond.
The current owner, Rita Dinsdale, is selling the freehold property in order to retire. There is also potential to convert some of the letting rooms into private owner accommodation if desired.
Dinsdale said: “It has been a pleasure and privilege to own such a magnificent mansion for the past 50 years in the Yorkshire countryside, which has given pleasure to thousands of guests from all over the world. I hope the new owner will love and cherish this beautiful one-off building as I have, being set in this wonderful location in this historic market town.”
Mark Worley, director of hotels at Christie and Co, who is handling the sale, said: “We’re seeing increasing demand for holiday accommodation that can cater for multi-generational groups, or couples wanting a quiet, relaxing stay.
