Burgh island hotel has completed its first year under general manager Sally Russell, who has introduced operational automation and new guest experiences at the Devon resort.
Russell joined the Art Deco tidal island hotel following senior roles at Harbour Hotels and Vineyard Group.
The hotel has introduced integrated management systems alongside AI tools to analyse guest feedback and track operational trends. New booking systems and digital tools are also being developed to manage pre-arrival communications linked to tidal access.
Staff recruitment, onboarding and development policies have been restructured under the new management.
In addition, the resort has expanded its themed dining events and is developing outdoor wellness activities including guided walks and cold-water swimming.
Russell started her career aged 16 in a village pub before working in front-of-house and events roles, including a period managing a British-themed hotel in Japan.
The hotel, which inspired two Agatha Christie novels, is accessed via a sea tractor.
Russell said: “We are completely intertwined with the local community here. The island only thrives if the people, businesses and environment around it thrive too. Sustainability and community have to sit at the heart of everything we do.
“The vision is to preserve what makes Burgh Island so magical: its glamour, individuality and sense of escapism, while ensuring it continues to evolve sustainably for generations to come.”
