Sopwell House in Hertfordshire has appointed Luigi Villani as director of spa to oversee its Cottonmill Spa and The Club at Cottonmill.
Villani joins the property following more than 20 years of international experience in luxury spa and wellness operations. He previously worked at Kempinski Hotels as head of spas, overseeing global strategy across 80 properties.
Before his role at Kempinski, Villani served as director of learning and performance at spa management company Ocean View Monaco, managing 380 staff across 17 cruise ship spas. His background focuses on revenue optimisation, operational performance and staff development.
In his new position, Villani will manage daily operations, member strategy and service delivery across the hotel’s spa facilities.
Giammario Ragnoli, general manager of Sopwell House, said: “We are delighted to welcome Luigi to Sopwell House. His global track record across luxury operations, strategy and talent development makes him an ideal fit as we continue to elevate our wellness offering.”
Villani added: “Sopwell House is an extraordinary hotel with a glowing reputation for delivering an exceptional spa experience. I look forward to building on the spa’s success and enhancing the guest journey further, while also championing the talented team behind it.”
News Analysis
The useful precedent reaches back to November 2018 because it is the only earlier senior appointment tied directly to a change in Sopwell House’s spa proposition. Sopwell House said then that Angelina Chua had joined as general manager while it prepared to launch its new spa the following spring, after she had run the hotel, spa and country club at Stapleford Park. The spa project therefore sat within hotel-wide operational leadership.
That structure persisted into May 2025, when Sopwell House said it had appointed Giammario Ragnoli as general manager and explicitly included the spa in his hotel-wide remit. His brief added a high-performance culture and continued growth to the guest-service language attached to the role. The change in emphasis matters: with Cottonmill established, Sopwell House framed the management problem around operating discipline and commercial performance.
Villani’s appointment turns that broad brief into a two-tier management structure, with a hotel-wide general manager above a dedicated spa operator. It also matches the experience Sopwell House bought into the top job: Ragnoli arrived from the Hurlingham, where he had served as chief operating officer, after a long general-management tenure at Stoke Park. The Club at Cottonmill now sits under leaders drawn separately from private-club management and international spa operations.
