Family-owned brewer and pub operator Hall and Woodhouse has reported a 16% increase in underlying profit before tax to £9.3m for the year ended 31 January 2026. The result marks the end of the third consecutive year of growth, following increases of 25% in 2025 and 50% in 2024.
Total profit after tax more than doubled to £8.9m, compared with £4.1m the previous year. The company attributed the increase to improved trading, a lower taxation charge and an insurance payment relating to the fire at its Osborne View pub in Fareham.
Hall and Woodhouse’s net debt increased slightly to £36.9m from £35.5m, despite capital expenditure rising to £19.1m from £16.5m. The company said it had £55m of banking facilities in place to further support investment across its estate, brands and workforce.
Managed pubs delivered growth during the year, which Hall and Woodhouse said was driven primarily by acquisitions and investment projects across its estate. The company highlighted key developments at The Barn in Woolacombe, The Dolphin in Beer, The Quay in Poole and The Seven Stars in Petersfield, alongside the opening of its new-build H and W Crowthorne Pub.
The Business Partner division recorded profits broadly in line with the previous year. Meanwhile, brewery volumes increased by 4%, with the company’s Outland craft keg ale range performing strongly across its pubs. Recorded growth in Outland volumes, particularly Outland Stout, more than offset a decline in Badger cask ale.
The company said the premium bottled ale market in the off-trade remained challenging due to falling volumes and tight margins, although the Badger range performed solidly in the circumstances.

The quality of the estate, the calibre of our Business Partners and the strength of the support that we provide underpin a highly stable, cash generative and valuable business.
“As a longstanding family business, we are proud to be a force for good. However, punitive employment taxes, employment rights legislation, unlevel playing fields on VAT versus supermarkets and on business rates versus online businesses and Inheritance Tax changes all act as disincentives and make it harder to behave in this positive way.
He added: “The recently announced reduction in business rates is a small, but welcome, step in the right direction, but much more needs to be done to unleash the full growth potential of the hospitality industry.”
