Bristol hoteliers back plans to expand YTL Arena capacity

Bristol hoteliers have welcomed proposals to increase the capacity of the YTL Arena currently under construction at the former Filton Airfield site.

Developers this week confirmed their intention to raise the approved capacity from 17,500 to 20,000, which would make the venue one of the five largest indoor arenas in Europe, matching London’s O2 Arena.

The expansion is subject to new planning and licensing approvals.

The Bristol Hoteliers Association (BHA) said the proposal could significantly benefit the city’s hospitality sector.

The arena is being developed within the Brabazon Hangar, part of the former airfield, and is now expected to open in autumn 2028 following earlier delays.

Adam Flint, BHA chair, said: “This is a significant development which will well and truly put Bristol on the map, not just in the UK but Europe. The ability to host the biggest and most popular performers can only be good for the city’s hotels, bars and restaurants.

“There have been a number of delays in the planned opening date, which of course have been disappointing. But we have no doubt that when it does open, the wait will have been worthwhile.”

He added: “It’s crucial that they get the transport infrastructure right to serve a venue of this size, but if they do, the hospitality sector of the entire city is likely to benefit from this world class venue.”

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.
