Hilton has opened the Waldorf Astoria Shanghai Qiantan, marking its 888th hotel in Greater China and Mongolia, with plans to double its presence in the region.

Hilton has announced the opening of Waldorf Astoria Shanghai Qiantan, its 888th hotel in Greater China and Mongolia. The new hotel is located in the Qiantan District of Pudong, Shanghai, and features 204 rooms and suites. This development is part of Hilton’s strategy to expand its presence in China, where it aims to double its portfolio in the coming years.

The Waldorf Astoria Shanghai Qiantan is situated on the southern stretch of Shanghai’s new Bund, offering panoramic river views. The hotel offers multiple dining options, including Arame, which serves Mediterranean-inspired cuisine, and Fu Cheng, which features Min cuisine by Michelin-starred chef Justin Yang. The property also includes the Starlight room, a reservation-only chef’s table with an open kitchen and private terrace.

Hilton’s expansion in China is not limited to Shanghai. The company has announced several new projects in the luxury and lifestyle segments. These include the Waldorf Astoria Shenzhen, set to open in 2028, and the LXR Hotels & Resorts in Tianjin, expected in 2029. Other planned openings include Conrad Zhoushan in 2028 and two Curio Collection hotels in Quanzhou and Shanghai, both slated for 2026.

The Waldorf Astoria Shanghai Qiantan is the second Waldorf Astoria in Shanghai, making it the third city globally, after Dubai and Doha, to host two hotels under this brand. Over the past 15 years, Waldorf Astoria has established a presence in China with hotels in Beijing, Chengdu, Xiamen, and now two in Shanghai.

Hilton’s growth strategy in China is part of a broader plan to expand its luxury and lifestyle offerings across Asia Pacific. The company aims to surpass 250 luxury and lifestyle hotels in the region, with more than 1,000 such hotels already operational globally and an additional 500 in development worldwide.

The company first entered the Chinese market in 1988 and has since grown its room inventory nearly tenfold over the past 12 years. Hilton’s expansion plans reflect its confidence in the Chinese market, driven by increasing demand for travel and hospitality services.

Hilton operates 11 brands across more than 280 destinations in China, employing approximately 70,000 people in the region. The company has corporate offices in Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Chengdu, and Nanjing.
