Some 13 temporary accommodation sites, including two historic hotels, are reportedly set to stop housing asylum seekers as the government continues its drive to end the use of asylum hotels, according to ITV News.
The Home Office said that the closures, which include the Grand Metropole Hotel on Blackpool Promenade and the Grade II-listed Grosvenor Hotel in Stratford-upon-Avon, are expected to save taxpayers £51m and will bring the number of hotels being used to accommodate asylum seekers below 160, down from a peak of around 400 under the previous Conservative government.
ITV also reported that the government has pledged to end the use of asylum hotels entirely by the next general election, with plans to increasingly move asylum seekers into larger, more basic accommodation, including former military sites. Anna Turley, the immigration minister, said the government was “turning that around” by ending the use of asylum hotels and moving people into alternative accommodation.
The Grand Metropole, one of Blackpool’s two oldest hotels, has already stopped housing asylum seekers. The hotel is located on the town’s Promenade and has operated as a hotel since the late 18th century. ITV understands that the closures follow the government’s wider plans to expand the use of former military sites for asylum accommodation. Proposed locations include former military bases at Barnham in Suffolk, Bicester in Oxfordshire and Linton-on-Ouse in North Yorkshire, which together could provide accommodation for around 3,750 people.
The government is also looking to extend the use of existing asylum accommodation sites in Crowborough, East Sussex, until 2030 and Wethersfield, Essex, beyond 2027. The move comes as ministers seek to reduce the cost of the asylum accommodation system, while shifting away from hotels located in town and city centres.
