Peel Hotels has brought to market four of its hotels, which are based in Wallingford, Carlisle, Newcastle and Peterborough, for an undisclosed amount.
The portfolio includes the George Hotel in Wallingford, the Crown and Mitre Hotel in Carlisle, the Caledonian Hotel in Newcastle, and the Bull Hotel in Peterborough, either individually or as a group.
News of the sale follows the decision by founder and chairman Robert Peel to retire. Peel, who began his career aged 17, established the company in 1998 after previously serving as chief executive of Mount Charlotte Investments.
The George Hotel is a 16th Century Grade II-listed coaching inn with 39 bedrooms and a 120-capacity function suite, while The Crown and Mitre is an Edwardian property in Carlisle city centre featuring 91 bedrooms and a ballroom for 400 guests.
The Caledonian Hotel, located in the Jesmond district of Newcastle, contains 89 bedrooms and seven meeting rooms. The Bull Hotel in Peterborough is a 17th Century Grade II-listed building with 118 bedrooms and was the founding acquisition of the group.
Peel said: “Having led one of the largest hotel groups in Europe, and then created Peel Hotels in 1998, the time has come for me to enjoy some well-deserved rest as I approach my eighth decade, particularly as I started in the hospitality trade at the age of 17.
“I believe that Peel Hotels offers really traditional, high-quality accommodation, our food and beverage offering is one of the best across the markets we operate in, and our hospitality team is second to none.”
He added: “As I prepare to wind down my direct involvement in running hotels, I can see the appeal for growing groups and owner operators to purchase these hotels along with their wonderful teams to build upon what I have created over recent decades.”
Jeremy Jones, head of hotels brokerage at Christie and Co, who is handling the sale, said: “We are delighted to have been instructed to market these four hotels within Peel Hotels, which offer some of the best trading locations in their respective markets. We encourage interested parties to get in touch with us to discuss the opportunities further.”
