Hospitality operator Buzzworks has announced plans to acquire the Douglas Hotel on the Isle of Arran in mid-July for an undisclosed sum.
The venue, located on the Brodick seafront, has operated for more than 170 years. It will remain open to guests during the summer before a planned closure in the autumn for a refurbishment.
The group aims to reopen the hotel in spring 2027 as part of the Buzzworks House Collection portfolio. The project will convert the site into a pub, restaurant and 21-bedroom venue.
Acclaimed designer Jim Hamilton will lead the refurbishment, which will feature an open-plan bar and upgraded outdoor areas.
The acquisition expands the presence of Buzzworks along the Ayrshire coast, where the company already operates venues including Scotts and Lido in Troon, alongside Vic’s and the Vine in Prestwick.
The existing employees at the hotel will join Buzzworks as part of the acquisition. The company currently operates 23 venues across Scotland.
Kenny Blair, chief executive of Buzzworks, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be welcoming The Douglas into Buzzworks. This is an iconic hotel with a fantastic reputation, and we are proud to be taking this special place forward and building on its legacy.”
Kate Russell, general manager of The Douglas, added: “As we look to the future, we believe Buzzworks is the right fit to take The Douglas into its next chapter. The business’ passion for hospitality, respect for the heritage of their venues and commitment to the communities they serve gives us great confidence that the hotel has an exciting future ahead.”
News Analysis
In December 2025, Buzzworks made headlines with its acquisition of the Nether Abbey Hotel in North Berwick, marking the company’s first venture into accommodation as part of its broader expansion strategy. The purchase involved a significant investment, including plans for a seven-figure redevelopment of the historic site to enhance guest facilities, highlighting Buzzworks’ commitment to integrating their existing hospitality experience with accommodation offerings as noted in their recent announcements.
Furthermore, in June 2026, Buzzworks expanded its portfolio again by acquiring The Bonnie Badger in Gullane. This off-market deal, though undisclosed in price, reflects a trend of strategic investments by the company in boutique hotel properties, following a successful refurbishment of the venue in 2018. The acquisition continues to underscore Buzzworks’ ambition to enhance its presence in the Scottish hospitality sector as reported by industry insiders.
The upcoming acquisition of the Douglas Hotel on Arran not only adds to Buzzworks’ growing portfolio but also signifies their increased focus on establishing a foothold in popular tourist destinations. This move aligns with a previous analysis highlighting a surge in market interest for hotels on scenic Scottish islands, which benefit from high visitor numbers, further indicating a strong potential for future revenue growth in this sector as seen with the recent sale of the hotel for £2.9m.
