Tourism trade association UKinbound has written to the prime minister calling for a strategic reset in how the government approaches the UK visitor economy.
In a letter sent last week (20 July), the organisation warned that policy decisions made in isolation across Whitehall are undermining international competitiveness.
UKinbound also said that the overseas visitors sector represents the country’s fifth-largest export industry, with spending by tourists counting directly towards national export figures.
However, 18 months after committing to a Visitor Economy Strategy, ministers have yet to set out plans to maximise the sector’s economic contribution. Decisions covering visas, Electronic Travel Authorisation charges, transport links, skills, taxation and local visitor levies remain split across separate government departments.
UKinbound confirmed it will engage with ministers as department appointments are finalised, urging coordinated action to improve the UK’s appeal to international travellers and boost export revenues.
Joss Croft, chief executive of UKinbound, said: “We congratulate the prime minister on his appointment and look forward to working with the new government. International tourism is fiercely competitive, with destinations around the world competing for visitors, investment and market share.
“You can’t grow an export industry by making it harder and more expensive for customers to buy your product, so we urge the government to take a more joined-up approach across Whitehall to ensure policies support, rather than undermine, Britain’s competitiveness.”
