Travelodge has opened a 73-room hotel in Wakefield city centre, the first in its estate to trial a new self-service food and beverage concept.
The opening marks the budget hotel operator’s third property in the Wakefield area and its 21st in the wider region. The company said it has taken a new 25-year lease on the site as part of its strategy to expand through the acquisition and conversion of existing hotels.
The hotel has been refurbished to feature Travelodge’s latest design, including a multi-functional reception area, next-generation rooms with the brand’s Dreamer king-size bed, work-friendly layouts, high-speed Wi-Fi, LED lighting and water-saving technology.
The Wakefield hotel will also become the first in the Travelodge estate to trial a new self-service food and beverage concept, featuring a hot pizza vending machine, hot bakery machine and barista-style coffee machine alongside the brand’s existing vending machines and breakfast-to-go offering.
Located in Wakefield city centre, the hotel is within walking distance of Trinity Walk Shopping Centre and Wakefield train station. The opening is expected to create 16 jobs.
Jeff Hocking of Whitestone Retail and Leisure acted as Travelodge’s retained development manager for the acquisition.
Tony O’Brien, UK development director of Travelodge, said: “We are delighted to officially open our new Travelodge in Wakefield town centre. This is our third hotel in the Wakefield area and 21st in the region, and the first branded budget hotel in the town centre, providing a strong base for both business and leisure guests.
“We have taken a new 25-year lease on the property, reflecting our continued investment in strong city centre locations and commitment to delivering great value accommodation. With requirements to open around 300 more Travelodges throughout the UK, acquiring and rebranding other operators’ hotels will play an important role in this programme.”

Travelodge has opened a 73-room hotel in Wakefield city centre, marking a significant move for the budget hotel chain. This property is the first in its portfolio to trial a new self-service food and beverage concept, which reflects a shift towards automation in the hospitality experience. Travelodge’s approach stands out as it navigates the competitive landscape of budget accommodation.
The new Wakefield site represents Travelodge’s third venture in the area and its 21st in the broader region. The company entered into a 25-year lease for the property as part of its strategy to acquire and convert existing hotels. This aligns with previous acquisitions, such as the recent acquisition of 11 hotels across the UK aimed at expanding its footprint and diversifying its leasehold portfolio.
Travelodge’s foray into Wakefield follows its trend of refurbishing properties to include modern features, such as multi-functional reception areas and advanced room designs. This is similar to the recent opening of a new site in Rotherham, where the hotel chain debuted high-end designs while providing budget accommodation options. As part of its growth strategy, Travelodge maintains its commitment to both business and leisure segments, driven by its ongoing investment in city centre locations.
