£4.3bn UK tourism boost forecast as 10.6m Brits plan breaks

A total of 10.6m Brits are planning an overnight holiday in the UK this August bank holiday weekend, potentially generating a £4.3bn boost to the economy, according to VisitEngland’s latest Trip Tracker survey.

The figure is slightly below last year’s 11.2 million planned trips, while 11 million people planned an overnight UK break over the same weekend in 2024 and 9.7 million in 2023.

The anticipated boost comes as the domestic tourism sector faces a challenging year, with overnight trips in the UK declining in 2025. Coastal destinations have been particularly affected, with overnight trips to England’s coast falling 18% year-on-year.

A further 5.8 million people remain undecided about taking an overnight holiday trip in England over the bank holiday. The main reasons cited were waiting to see the weather, looking for deals or special offers and checking whether they could afford a trip.

VisitEngland said its wider research shows that shifting just 10% of spending currently going towards overseas holidays to domestic breaks could generate an additional £8bn a year for the economy.

The figures also come as the UK Government’s Great British Summer Savings scheme continues, offering reduced-cost access to attractions and leisure activities over the summer. VisitEngland is also preparing to launch the next phase of its £2m “All on England’s Coast” campaign in autumn, aimed at encouraging coastal breaks during the quieter season.

Tourism is worth an estimated £127bn annually to the English economy, supporting 2.1 million jobs across the country.

Stephanie Peacock, tourism minister, said: “It is brilliant that so many people are choosing to spend their August bank holiday weekend in the UK, whether enjoying the summer weather at our beautiful coastlines or exploring our towns and cities.

“Domestic breaks truly help our local areas to thrive by boosting support for small, locally owned businesses, strengthening social cohesion and promoting pride in where we live. It is also a great opportunity to make the most of the final weekend of our Great British Summer Savings scheme, allowing families to enjoy discounted access to attractions and leisure activities such as theme parks, soft play centres and cinemas, while also backing businesses who rely on footfall in the summer season.”

Patricia Yates, chief executive of VisitEngland, added: “Businesses will be looking to the long weekend for a critical late summer lift after what has been a very mixed year for many destinations. We can also see from our latest consumer research that the cost of living remains a concern.

“Brits are still keen to take their breaks, however many are booking last minute and wanting to save on accommodation, activities, eating out and searching for good value options. It is nail biting if you’re a small business, so do please get out and support our amazing destinations, first class attractions and local events this long weekend and beyond.”
