Property developer Larasian has moved its Salisbury Cathedral Hotel project into the construction phase after discharging all pre-commencement planning conditions.
The project will see the restoration of a Grade II building close to Salisbury Cathedral, with heritage preservation forming a central part of the development. Works will include the reinstatement of the building’s front facade to its original appearance, replacing its sash windows, upgrading the bay window and restoring internal archways.
The completed development will comprise a 13-guestroom luxury boutique hotel, including a fine dining restaurant, a rooftop bar and an al fresco patio. The development will introduce 28 new jobs, forming part of a wider economic boost to the local community.
Larasian has now invited investment partners to join the project as it moves from approval into delivery, seeking equity investment, strategic partnerships and value creation to support the development.
The Spitfire bar will offer 360-degree views across Salisbury, including the cathedral, Old Sarum and four other city spires. It takes inspiration from the city’s role in the production of the Spitfire during the second World War.
The historic building has undergone significant alterations since parts of the original hotel were changed or removed in 1929. However, its mid 18th Century staircase still remains intact and will become the centrepiece of the ground floor.
Barry Robbins, chief executive of Larasian, said: “This is a building with real character and genuine significance to Salisbury and we take our responsibility as its custodians seriously. Our approach has always been to let the heritage of the site guide the design, and with that foundation in place, we’re excited to get to work and deliver something the city can be proud of for generations to come.
“A huge team of local delivery partners have been involved to get us to this stage including Corstorphine and Wright Architects, structural engineers Andrew Waring Associates, Forum Heritage Services, KPPC Planning Consultants, NT Surveying, Jigsaw Interior Design and PWH Building, along with the internal project team at Larasian.”
Brian Currie, chair of the Larasian board, added: “It’s been an interesting process so far with the architects’ designs and learning about the history of the site. We’re delighted to have reached this milestone and to be moving forward with the Cathedral Hotel project.”
