Cornwall-based hotels Watergate Bay and SeaSpace have both achieved Gold certification from Green Tourism, recognising their efforts to improve sustainability across their businesses.
The Gold certification is the highest level awarded by Green Tourism and follows an independent assessment against 15 sustainability goals covering people, places and the planet.
Located in Newquay, SeaSpace hotel, created by the operators behind Watergate Bay hotel, introduced a number of environmental measures including on-site solar energy, recycling and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill. The business also works with local Cornish suppliers.
Watergate Bay hotel has focused its sustainability strategy on circularity, conservation and community. As part of these efforts, the hotel partnered with Nurdle UK to remove microplastics and nurdles from Watergate Bay beach.
More than 80 litres of material was removed during the three-day operation, as recent sand samples have seen a 97% reduction in microplastics since the clean-up began, from 25.45g–0.8g per square metre.
The two businesses will now use the assessment to identify further opportunities to reduce their environmental impact, while continuing to work with employees, guests, suppliers and local communities.
Helen Bishop, group head of sustainability and engagement for Watergate Bay Hotel and SeaSpace, said: “We’re incredibly proud to have achieved the Green Tourism Gold Award. It recognises the commitment of our teams and the practical steps being taken across the two businesses every day.
“Protecting our wider environment takes continuous work. This is an important milestone, but it also encourages us to keep learning, improving and finding better ways to operate.”
