Coastal resort Portmarnock Resort and Jameson Golf Links has achieved its Green Key certification for its commitment to sustainability, following an 18-month auditing process.
The award is the global standard for tourism sustainability and is recognised in more than 90 countries. Securing Green Key certification requires demonstrating a commitment to environmental and social sustainability criteria, as well as encouraging equality, diversity and inclusion for employees and customers.
The four-star resort is situated on “The Velvet Strand”, 20 minutes from Dublin and was once the home of the Jameson whiskey family. The property features 134 guest rooms, a spa and the Jameson Golf Links.
The business said that in its 134 guestrooms, single-use plastics have been removed and guests are asked to consider if they need daily linen and towel replacements. Its heating system has also been upgraded so it can be managed centrally.
Food waste has also been dramatically reduced, following new procedures across its kitchens and restaurants, along with improved waste collection systems. Guests are now encouraged to fill their own reusable water bottles via filtered water machines, while externally, the grounds are making use of rainwater collection using Jameson barrels. Golf buggies and maintenance machinery have also shifted from petrol to electric and hybrid models.
The hotel has partnered with Dublin Beekeeping Association, with the grounds accommodating six beehives and the golf course superintendent acting as Beekeeper. As part of the collaboration, the team is also helping to educate the local population on what an important role bees hold in the environment.

There has been a huge collective effort and commitment from the team, with everyone getting behind our shared goals to improve how we behave, operate and educate ourselves and our customers when it comes to sustainability. But it’s not something which now stops, there are always further improvements to be made to help us take the business forward in the most sustainable way – and it’s a challenge we all relish!”
