NoMad London has appointed John Sutherland as general manager, marking his return to the luxury hotel after helping launch the property as part of its original pre-opening team.
Sutherland rejoins the Covent Garden hotel from Park Hyatt London River Thames, where he served as director of sales and marketing and led the commercial launch of the brand’s first hotel in the UK and Ireland.
His appointment marks a return to NoMad, where he previously served as director of sales and marketing, overseeing the hotel’s commercial strategy from launch. During its inaugural year, he also took on the role of interim general manager, leading operations while continuing to manage the commercial function.
With more than 17 years’ experience in luxury hospitality, Sutherland was also part of the original pre-opening team at NoMad New York, helping establish the brand during its early expansion.
NoMad London said his return marks the next phase for the hotel as it continues to build on its position in London’s luxury hospitality market.
Sutherland said: “Some places stay with you, and NoMad London has always been one of them. Having been part of the hotel’s opening journey, it’s a privilege to return as general manager.
“This is a hotel with an incredible team, a unique spirit and a reputation for creating unforgettable experiences, and I’m excited to continue building on that success together.”
News Analysis
NoMad London began as the brand’s bridge from an American cluster to an international portfolio. Sydell planned its first UK site in July 2020, placing it in the former Bow Street Magistrates Court and using the design to connect the New York and London art scenes. That distant starting point matters because the London hotel in Covent Garden would become NoMad’s flagship, carrying the international identity Sydell built into its design.
The property’s financing then fixed the division of responsibility around the hotel. In October 2023, Cohort Capital provided a £73m refinancing facility as the bank syndicate’s term approached expiry, while Sydell retained operation under a management agreement. That refinancing changed the capital provider but kept Sydell as operator, preserving continuity in hotel management through the financial reset.
That operating arrangement acquired a different purpose in April 2024, when Hilton bought control of Sydell and said London would join its booking and loyalty platforms later that year. Sydell kept design, branding and management, while Hilton took development; that made the flagship the live test of the model Hilton intended to export. Hilton projected as many as 100 NoMads, with roughly 10 already under discussion, while independent owners would continue to hold every property.
