Safestay has appointed Eliza Maćkiewicz as head of commercial to oversee revenue, pricing and distribution across its portfolio.
The appointment follows the arrival of chief operating officer Davide Caschili in June. Maćkiewicz will lead the group’s commercial strategy across sales, marketing and customer acquisition.
In her new role, she will operate from the company’s Warsaw hub, supporting 20 properties across Europe.
Maćkiewicz joins the business after spending more than nine years at travel platform Travelist, where she held the same position.
Caschili joined the board with more than 25 years of hospitality experience, having previously held operational leadership roles at Edyn Group, Generator and Freehand Hotels.
The management changes follow recent UK property sales aimed at strengthening the company’s balance sheet while funding ongoing development.
Larry Lipman, chairman of Safestay, said: “Eliza brings significant commercial experience to Safestay at an important stage in the group’s development. We have strengthened our balance sheet following recent UK property sales whilst continuing to invest in our long-term development. Supporting Caschili, who joined in June and brings significant experience of the European hostel market to Safestay, the appointments further strengthen the team to deliver against our long-term strategy.”
Caschili added: “Safestay has a strong brand, a clear value proposition and an excellent portfolio of well-located hostels. Having joined the business in June, I have been impressed by the quality of our people and hostels, and am looking forward to working closely with the team to keep raising standards across the portfolio and delivering a consistently strong experience for our guests.”
Maćkiewicz concluded: “There is a real opportunity to build on the commercial capabilities Safestay already has in place, particularly through the Warsaw Commercial Hub. I’m excited to use data, pricing, sales, distribution and digital channels more effectively to support performance across the portfolio.”
News Analysis
The commercial logic behind today’s appointment began in July 2023, when Safestay opened a Warsaw group-sales office and launched a new website to push direct bookings. The office was designed as a specialist selling function rather than another layer of property management. By concentrating customer acquisition in one place, Safestay gave Warsaw a portfolio-wide brief before placing its commercial leadership there.
That centralisation initially changed the booking mix. During the following year, Safestay said direct and non-commissionable channels supplied 37% of bed nights, while group bookings accounted for 16% of accommodation sales. Warsaw had become a revenue engine whose worth lay in steering demand towards lower-cost channels. Its early success explains why Safestay has put pricing, distribution and customer acquisition under the same roof.
The test changed in 2025, when Safestay’s overseas revenues fell by 13.5%. Revenue per available bed dropped to £16.43 as weaker demand and tourist levies weighed on European trading. The commercial problem had moved from improving channel mix to defending rate and demand across the markets Warsaw serves. Total bed nights fell by 6% to 877,674.
