Goodwood Estate is set to transform The Goodwood Hotel into a luxury coaching inn as part of a major refurbishment programme planned for 2027, marking the next phase of expansion for the business.
The redesigned hotel will include 64 guestrooms, 16 new suites, two restaurants, a snug, library, bootroom and event spaces. The project will see the existing hotel closed throughout 2027, with the reimagined property expected to welcome guests from early 2028.
Originally an 18th century coaching inn and market garden supplying Goodwood House, the hotel will be redesigned to reflect its heritage while incorporating contemporary comforts. Goodwood said the hotel would act as a gateway to the wider Estate, giving guests access to its motorsport, aviation, championship golf, wellness, food and countryside offerings.
Hospitality designer Russell Sage Studio has been assigned to lead the project, with the studio drawing on the Estate’s history and surrounding landscape to shape the interiors and guest experience.
The transformation forms part of Goodwood’s longer-term investment in the Estate and is intended to create a new experience for future generations while retaining the character of the original property.
The hotel is expected to welcome guests in early 2028, with further details and design updates expected to be shared as the project progresses.
Charles Gordon-Lennox, the Duke of Richmond and Gordon, said: “For centuries, successive Dukes have invited guests to share in the experiences they loved at Goodwood, from hunting and horseracing, to flying, farming, motor racing, wellbeing, nature and art. We wanted to return to that original spirit and create somewhere from which guests can explore, discover and deeply connect with nature. This is much more than a refurbishment. It is an opportunity to elevate and redefine the Hotel for future generations while remaining true to everything that makes Goodwood so special.”
Russell Sage, founder of Russell Sage Studio, said: “The original inn and surrounding buildings hold an extraordinary history and we want that story to become one of the defining reasons guests fall in love with the reimagined Goodwood Hotel.
“We’re uncovering its fascinating past, celebrating and preserving its treasures, while creating something that feels fresh, relevant and focussed on the future. We’re also bringing together an impressive roster of local artists and makers to collaborate with us on this journey. Their work will help create a truly special experience for a new generation of guests – one that brings them closer to the character, creativity and spirit of the glorious Goodwood Estate.
“With the Estate’s extraordinary heritage and long-standing reputation for exceptional hospitality, I have no doubt that The Goodwood Hotel will become a very special second home – a place guests will want to return to, time and time again.”
