Matfen Hall completes six-year £50m transformation

Luxury hotel Matfen Hall has completed a six-year transformation following a £50m investment, with the Grade II listed country house now operating as Northumberland’s only five-star hotel.

The final phase of the redevelopment will see the opening of the Retreat spa this September, completing an extensive programme covering the hotel’s accommodation, leisure, dining and golf facilities.

Dating back to 1836, the Jacobethan mansion has undergone a major restoration designed to preserve its heritage while introducing new facilities and amenities.

The redevelopment has increased the hotel’s accommodation to 63 guestrooms and suites, including 10 newly created rooms. Existing features such as fireplaces, timber detailing and mouldings have been retained, while the Gothic Great Hall has been restored to its original role as the property’s main entrance.

The Retreat Spa will open within an additional wing of the hotel, doubling the size of the former spa. Facilities include an 18-metre indoor pool, two saunas, a steam room, ice baths and treatment rooms, alongside cryotherapy and hyperbaric chambers.

The wider leisure offering includes a relaxation and sun room, private lounge areas as well as a Technogym-equipped gym and pilates and yoga studio.

Matfen Hall has also expanded its food and beverage offering as part of the transformation, introducing 1832 Bar and The Drawing Room, which serves afternoon tea. The hotel’s fine dining restaurant, Emerald, is Northumberland’s only AA 3-Rosette restaurant while new venue Cloisters offers seafood, grill and champagne.

Golf facilities have also expanded for 2026 with the launch of The Douglas, a new 18-hole championship course. Further investment has been made in the golf operation through a new driving range with 15 Toptracer bays, a simulator and teaching bay, short-game practice facilities and an all-weather putting course.

James O’Donnell, head of commercial development of Matfen Hall, said: “Six years ago, we set out to transform Matfen Hall into one of the UK’s leading country house hotels while retaining its elegance and history. We have taken an architecturally beautiful building and breathed new life into it, creating excellent facilities and an enhanced guest experience. We are incredibly proud of the new offering, and look forward to welcoming guests to experience the estate in its new chapter this autumn.”
