McKeever Hotels invests £600k in new cocktail bar at Armagh City Hotel

McKeever Hotels has announced plans to invest £600,000 in a new cocktail bar at Armagh City Hotel as part of a wider £4m capital investment programme aimed at transforming the property into a four-star hospitality destination.

Named The Meridian, the 120-cover venue is expected to open in early winter and will feature a cocktail-led offering, private dining space and a dedicated tasting room, with an emphasis on local food and drink producers.

The project forms the latest phase of McKeever Hotels’ investment in Armagh City Hotel since acquiring the property more than a year ago. The wider programme is intended to strengthen the hotel’s appeal as an all-island tourism and conference destination. The venue has been designed by Belfast-based Drinksology, the hospitality consultancy behind projects including New York’s Dead Rabbit bar and the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin and London, while Carrickfergus-based McCue Fit-Out has been appointed to deliver the development.

The Meridian draws inspiration from Armagh’s links to astronomy, timekeeping and navigation, taking its name from the city’s historic Meridian Line and its connection to the Armagh Observatory.

The bar will include The Constellation Room, a dedicated space for premium spirit and wine tastings, alongside a private dining room and a cocktail menu developed by Greg Buda, former director of education at The Dead Rabbit.

Eddie McKeever, managing director of McKeever Hotels, said: “When we bought this hotel over a year ago, we knew it had great strengths and enormous potential. Our research also revealed clear demand for a premium bar which would offer a different type of experience and act as a natural draw for locals, as well as hotel guests.

“We’ve brought in the best team to deliver this important restorative project and help elevate the hotel to a new level. We want The Meridian to become one of the region’s most talked about hospitality destinations.”

Andrew O’Doherty, architect and experiential designer at Drinksology, added: “The Meridian has been inspired by Armagh’s long-standing connection to discovery, navigation and measurement of time. Every element of the design has been developed to tell that story, creating a venue that feels distinctive, immersive and authentically connected to the city. Our vision is for The Meridian to become a place where people gather, connect and create lasting memories.”

News Analysis

McKeever Hotels has committed £600,000 to a new cocktail bar at Armagh City Hotel, part of a broader £4m capital investment programme aimed at ensuring the property achieves four-star status. This investment follows the acquisition of the hotel, where the current leadership aims to enhance its attraction as a premier tourism and conference destination. The recent plans echo the £3m capital expenditure declared last year which also was directed at improving facilities across the chain, including ambitions for The Lodge Hotel in Coleraine and Armagh City Hotel.

The Meridian, the upcoming 120-cover venue, is designed to feature a cocktail-centric offering alongside dining options focusing on local producers. This approach builds on the group’s longstanding focus on the food and beverage sector, a priority underscored in their earlier announcements about elevating guest experiences across their hotels which included major refurbishments. Attention to local culture prevails in The Meridian’s design, referencing Armagh’s rich history of astronomy and navigation.

Eddie McKeever, managing director of McKeever Hotels, is leveraging insight from the previous ownership and existing market demand to create a unique bar experience. His vision aligns with the company’s broader strategy for growth and customer engagement, much like the recent investments in revitalising the Dunsilly Hotel to meet evolving customer needs. This proactive investment strategy seeks to ensure longevity and relevance in a competitive hospitality landscape.
