The Sandman Signature Newcastle has become the latest UK hotel to secure Green Key certification after implementing a department-wide sustainability strategy.
The four-star hotel established a task force with representatives from all departments to improve its ecological footprint.
Staff installed water-saving restrictors on bedroom taps and showers, alongside refillable toiletries, to reduce single-use plastic bottles.
A new central system controls bedroom heating to cut energy consumption when guest rooms are unoccupied.
The hotel swapped standard items for recycled paper, bamboo tissues and paper straws, and added recycling dividers to guest bins.
Staff also installed bird boxes to support local wildlife at the city centre site.
The tourism sector ecolabel operates in 30 countries and assesses establishments against 150 criteria aligned with UN Tourism guidelines.
Managed by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, the scheme requires independent audits to drive annual environmental improvements.
The 170-bedroom hotel opened in 2011 opposite St James’ Park.
Katie Lowery, general manager of the hotel, said: “We have worked hard to become a more environmentally conscious hotel, and we all felt it was a key priority not just for guests but for us as a team. Having a dedicated Green Key task force has helped us really zone in on areas where we could cover off both easier wins and longer-term aspirations to be greener.
“Achieving the Green Key certification is something we’re very proud of. We know it’s not easily gained, so that makes it all the more valuable. But this is just the beginning – we look forward to finding new ways to save energy, waste and water and to improve our carbon footprint over the months ahead.”
