The historic Shaven Crown hotel in Shipton-under-Wychwood has been brought to the market by real estate firm Colliers with a guide price of £950,000.
The property, which is closed and currently not trading, is believed to have been licensed since 1384, making it one of the oldest licensed inns in England.
Situated between Burford and Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire, the Grade II listed building is offered freehold with vacant possession. The accommodation includes eight guest bedrooms, public trading areas, a commercial kitchen, customer parking, a three-bedroom owners’ suite, and a medieval Great Hall.
Substantial investment has previously been made into the fabric of the building, including structural work on the roof and broader property infrastructure.
Peter Brunt, hotels agency director at Colliers, said: “The Shaven Crown is a truly special property and one that I know exceptionally well. I was fortunate to be involved in its sale in both 2013 and 2019 and then acted on the letting of the business in 2023. Over that time, I have come to appreciate not only the quality of the building itself, but also the affection in which it is held by guests, local residents and operators alike.
“Having welcomed travellers for more than six centuries, The Shaven Crown has an extraordinary story behind it. We are pleased to have been entrusted once again with its sale and are confident that it will attract buyers who recognise both its commercial potential and its importance as one of the region’s most significant historic inns.”
News Analysis
In 2002, Colliers brokered Ian MacKenzie’s purchase of The Fox at Lower Oddington; two years later, the inn won Michelin Pub of the Year. In February 2021, Colliers said it had handled The Fox’s off-market sale after a campaign generated multiple offers. Peter Brunt led the agency work, closing a 19-year ownership cycle for a client who had first known the property as a local.
Repeat mandates, rather than one-off listings, define Brunt’s Cotswold inn work. In July 2025, he completed another Horse and Groom sale after overseeing multiple previous sales of the Upper Oddington property; its latest campaign carried a £1.5m asking price. Colliers has therefore returned not merely to the same district or property type, but to individual inns through successive ownership changes.
At the Shaven Crown, the price trajectory has reversed since the last sale. By May 2019, following an extensive refurbishment, Larry Lipman had bought the Shaven Crown after Colliers marketed it at £1.1m; the particulars then described seven letting rooms. The present guide sits 13.6% below that earlier marketing figure, despite the current particulars advertising one additional guest bedroom. In cash terms, the new threshold is £150,000 below the 2019 asking price.
