The Nici Bournemouth secures 5-star AA hotel rating

Bournemouth resort The Nici has secured a five-star AA rating, marking the return of the highest classification to the town for the first time since 2000.

The resort has introduced a luxury hotel offering to the area, combining a contemporary approach to hospitality with the character of the local coastline.

The inspection recognised the resort’s facilities, including its ocean-view suites, the 1 AA Rosette South Beach restaurant, a 30m heated outdoor pool and a wellness sanctuary, which earned the AA ‘Recommended Spa’ designation.

Nicolas Roach, founder, said: “Receiving 5 AA Stars is a historic moment for THE NICI and a monumental milestone for Bournemouth. When we set out to create THE NICI, our vision was to bring five-stars back to this beautiful coastal town. This award is a testament to the dedication, passion and relentless hard work of our whole team, who deliver world-class hospitality to our guests every day.”

Lukasz Dwornik, managing director, said: “Since day one, The Nici was built to be a vibrant, high-energy escape where a new standard of hospitality meets fun, lifestyle and design on the coast. Securing 5 AA Stars across the hotel, spa and dining proves the vibe is landing. A huge thanks to the team who made this happen. We’re just getting started, and we’re here to redefine what modern hospitality looks like.”

Simon Numphud, managing director at AA Media, said: “The Nici’s achievement of five AA stars reflects a sustained commitment to delivering an exceptional guest experience. Since the hotel’s creation, there has been continuous investment and a clear focus on refining every aspect of the offering.

“Five-Star status recognises not just excellence on the day of inspections, but several years of consistently high standards, meticulous attention to detail and an unwavering commitment to quality. We are delighted to recognise THE NICI with Five AA Stars, marking an important milestone for both the hotel and Bournemouth’s hospitality offering.”

The brand continues to expand across the UK, following openings in Lymington and Newquay in June 2026, with a Southampton site also in development.

The Nici built five-star status into its original plan

News Analysis

The Nici launched in 2022, and by August that year the company said it had spent £20m on refurbishment across the first phase, taking the Bournemouth property to 73 bedrooms. Planning permission for its 30-metre garden pool had arrived in July 2022. The approved scheme aimed to turn the hotel into a year-round resort, with wider works starting that October and most of the spa, fitness and extension programme targeted for completion by summer 2023.

The group treated five-star status as a management brief as well as a construction project. In January 2024 it hired Lukasz Dwornik as managing director after he had spent five years establishing and maintaining that classification at Southampton Harbour Hotel and Spa. Dwornik then assembled a senior team including Richard Warr from Chewton Glen for food and beverage and Christopher Drodge from The Pig Hotels for Bournemouth operations.

In November 2025, The Nici appointed John Willcock as general manager, adding a third-generation hotelier whose earlier senior posts included Hotel du Vin, Accor, Harbour Hotels and Taplow House. The appointment returned him both to the Dorset coast and the Nicolas James Group, where he had worked before. His five years at Macdonald Hotels included general manager posts in Windsor and Marlow.
